Our Organisation and Aims
The Comrie Development Trust is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status established in July 2006. Our aim is to promote the sustainable development of our village for the benefit of local people, groups and businesses and build a resilient community to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Our Achievements to date:
- We have started our work with two significant projects: Comrie Carbon Challenge and Cultybraggan.
- Comrie Carbon Challenge aims to reduce the carbon footprint of our community in a wide-ranging programme of action.
- Cultybraggan comprises the sustainable development of 90 acres of land at Cultybraggan Army Camp on the edge of our village acquired by the Trust using the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003
- Our membership stands at well over 600 people, one third of the eligible population of the village, making us one of the best-represented Development Trusts in the UK.
- In September 2007 we purchased Cultybraggan Army Camp. Our community ballot had a turnout of 72% (1404), and a majority in favour of 97% (1362). This is the most conclusive ballot to date under the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003.
- We have secured investment of over £1.5 million for our community in the first three years. We have already created 10 local jobs and provided 30 local contracts supporting our village economy.
- We are a national exemplar project for the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund. We have secured £300,000 from the Scottish Government to fund Carbon Challenge including the employment of an Office Manager and Comrie Carbon Challenge Officer for three years from December 2008.
- We have a wide range of financial partners in the public, private and charitable sectors. We are an entrepreneurial community raising both grant and loan investment for our community.
- We are exploring the establishment of the Comrie Foundation to attract local and national investment and donations for the long-term benefit of the village.
- We have achieved a wide range of community led projects from drama workshops and a skate park for our young people to music events, oral history to buy local campaigns.
- We are learning as we go, recording the lessons and sharing our progress with others.
